There will be a lot of buzz when Miami plays at Virginia Tech on Nov. 22 in their penultimate game of the 2025 regular season after the chaos surrounding the end of the 2024 game between the Hurricanes and Hokies. Miami beat Virginia Tech in 2024 when a hail-mary call was overturned on the final play.
ACC writer Andrea Adelson of ESPN chose the game at Virginia Tech for Miami in her "Games that will define each top college football team's 2025 season." Miami does not leave the state of Florida until they play at SMU on Nov. 1. The game at Virginia Tech is only the third road game for Miami in 2025.
Virginia Tech finished the 2024 season 6-7 after losing 24-10 to Minnesota in the Duke Mayo Bowl in Charlotte. Miami finished 10-3 in 2024 after a 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Defensive line coach Jason Taylor is the only returning Miami assistant coach on defense after a disappointing 2024 season defensively.
Miami has eight home games and four road games in 2024. Notre Dame is at Miami in the season opener and Florida concludes non-conference play for the Canes three weeks later. Florida State hosts Miami in the Hurricanes' first 2025 road game on Oct. 4. Miami has byes the week before and after playing Florida State.

"It is hard to choose games early in the year as "season-defining," though Notre Dame to open the schedule and Florida...certainly qualify...The Hurricanes could drop both of those...and go on a run to win the ACC and still make the College Football Playoff. That is why I am picking the game at Virginia Tech on Nov. 2...Miami finishes the season with two road games...and at Pitt"Andrea Adelson, ESPN
Miami leads the all-time series vs. Virginia Tech 26-15 and has won the last four games. The Hurricanes also have wins in the last three games played in Blacksburg. Miami has not lost at Virginia Tech since a 37-16 defeat in 2016. Virginia Tech has not won consecutive games against Miami since beating the Hurricanes from 2009-2011.
After losing its final two road games at Georgia Tech and Syracuse in 2024, closing the season strong at Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh could be critical for Miami to make the College Football Playoff. A 10-2 regular season record was not good enough for Miami to make the 2024 CFP. Miami might need an 11-1 regular season to qualify in 2025.
