Florida pulls away in second half to bury Miami in Jacksonville

Florida pulled away midway through the second half to defeat Miami on Sunday night in Jacksonville.

Florida used a 12- 3 run midway through the second half to extend its lead to 67-50 and maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game in an 82-66 win over Miami on Sunday night in Jacksonville. The starting frontcourt for Florida was the difference in the game.

Preseason all-American Alex Condon scored 19 points and had seven rebounds and Reuben Chinyelu had 16 and 12 before both fouled out. Florida starting small forward Thomas Haugh had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Malik Reneau led Miami with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Tru Washington scored 16 and Tre Donaldson 11 as the only other Miami players in double figures. Miami received nine points from its bench. Miami shot 34.4 percent from the field, made 5-18 three-point shots and 15-27 from the free throw line.

Miami took 12 more shots than Florida, but the Gators were far more efficient. Florida made 45.8 from the field, 9-20 on three-point attempts and 19-29 from the free throw line. Florida entered the game on Sunday night, making 19 of their 90 three-point shots in three games.

Florida went on an early 9-0 run after Miami scored the first two points of the game. Miami answered with its own 11-2 run to take a 13-12 lead. The game was close before Florida went on a 16-6 run late in the first half and took a 39-29 lead at halftime.

Florida received outstanding play off the bench from guard Urban Klavzar. Klavzar scored 15 points and made four of his seven three-point shots. Florida finished with 17 points off its bench. Florida was far more efficient than Miami offensively.

Miami is off until Thursday when they host Elon. Delaware State is at Miami on November 23. The next big test for Miami is on November 27, Thanksgiving Day against BYU in the ESPN Events Invitational that will be played in Orlando.
