Florida State at Miami has biggest win disparity in series history

The six win disparity between 7-0 Miami and 1-6 Florida State is the biggest in the history of the series per Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.

Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press reported that the game between sixth-ranked and 7-0 Miami and 1-6 Florida State is the biggest win discrepancy in the 69th meeting between the programs. Reynolds reported the biggest previous difference in wins between Miami and FSU were in 1958 and 1974.

Miami was 1-4 and Florida State 6-2 when the Seminoles won 17-6 in 1958. Florida State entered the 1974 game 0-8 and Miami was 5-2 when the Seminoles upset the Hurricanes 21-14. Miami is a 20.5 favorite as of Friday night on FanDuel. The ESPN Football Power Index gives Miami a 91.4 percent chance of beating Florida State.

Miami leads the all-time series with Florida State 35-33. Florida State leads 21-18 in games played in Miami. Miami has scored 1431 points all-time versus Florida State and allowed 1,491 points in the series. Florida State enters the game on Saturday with three straight wins versus Miami.

The longest winning streak for Miami over Florida State was six games from 2000 through 2004. Miami beat Florida State 16-14 in the 2004 Orange Bowl game after the 2003 season. That was the only season Florida State and Miami played twice during the same season.

Florida State has had two seven-game winning streaks versus Miami. The first was from 1963 through 1972. Florida State and Miami did not play in 1965, 1967 or 1968. The second Florida State seven-game winning streak over Miami was from 2010 through 2016. Miami ended that streak with a last-second win at FSU in 2017.

The largest margin of victory in the series was a pair of 47-0 wins. Miami beat FSU 47-0 in 1976. FSU flipped the score 21 years later with their own 47-0 win in 1997. Miami lost 45-3 the last time Florida State played at Hard Rock Stadium. The Hurricanes won 52-10 at Hard Rock Stadium in 2020.

Saturday is a rarity with Miami entering the game ranked sixth and Florida State 1-6 after beginning the season 10th in the national rankings. Florida State versus Miami was the most important rivalry nationally in the 1980s, early 1990s and first few years of the 2000s. The more recent meetings had one team entering with more to play for.
