Former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will visit SMU according to multiple reports. Van Dyke could reunite with SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee, who was Van Dyke's offensive coordinator for two years with Miami. Under Lashlee, Van Dyke was the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year as a redshirt freshman in 2021.
Van Dyke was largely ineffective in the two seasons after Lashlee left to become the head coach at SMU. In his one season playing with Lashlee calling plays, Van Dyke completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 TDs and six interceptions.
Van Dyke struggled with ineffectiveness and injuries in his two seasons without Lashlee at Miami before suffering a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament in his third game with Wisconsin in 2024. Van Dyke has completed 63.7 percent of his pass attempts for 7,891 yards, 55 TDs and 23 interceptions throughout his collegiate career.
Former Miami QB signee Tyler Van Dyke will take an official visit to SMU
If Van Dyke does transfer to SMU, he would be projected as a backup. SMU returns third-team All-ACC QB Kevin Jennings, who led the Mustangs to the regular season ACC title and berths in the conference championship game and College Football Playoff as they finished 11-3 overall and 8-1 in the ACC.
Miami could also be looking for a transfer QB. Emory Williams, who started two games for Miami with Van Dyke on the 2023 roster, completed five passes in 14 attempts for 26 yards with an interception in the 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. The uninspiring performance has many questioning the direction for Miami at QB in 2025.
Williams has completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 657 yards, four TDs and two interceptions over seven games in two seasons with Miami. With only two appearances in 2024, Williams was able to redshirt. Miami also returns freshman Judd Anderson and brings in 2025 signee Luke Nickel for next season.
