Former Miami quarterback Cam Ward finally secured his first victory of the 2026 season on Sunday, but the win had far less to do with a breakout day from the Tennessee starter than with contributions from the rest of the team.
The Titans beat the Indianapolis Colts 26-20 after opening the year 0-5, and the win came largely because the defense forced three turnovers while the special teams unit produced a blocked-punt touchdown.
Ward finished 11-of-22 passing for 102 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Through six games, Ward has completed 109 of 177 passes for 998 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He is completing 61.6% of his throws with a 75.0 passer rating and has added 66 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

- Week 2 vs. Eagles: L 24-20, 13-of-20, 183 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 94.4 rating, 4 carries for 2 TDs

What the season has looked like
The central issue has been a lack of explosive production through the air. Ward is averaging roughly 166 passing yards per game and 5.6 yards per attempt. Even before Sunday, his yards per attempt sat at essentially the same level as his rookie season, when he averaged 5.9. His completion percentage has risen from 59.8% in 2025 to 61.6% now, but that improvement has not produced many more sustained scoring drives.
The Philadelphia game was probably his most efficient outing, even without a touchdown pass. Ward averaged 9.2 yards per attempt, posted a 94.4 rating and scored twice on the ground. Against Baltimore he reached his season high of 222 passing yards and added 27 rushing yards.
The mistakes, however, have piled up recently. Ward went through his first two games without an interception, then threw one in each of the next four matchups. The pick against the Giants was particularly costly as it came in the end zone with 17 seconds left and Tennessee trailing 12-7.
The Houston loss was likely the low point as Tennessee managed only three points, Ward threw for 170 yards with no touchdowns and an interception, and he was sacked four times.
Sunday’s limited role in the win
The Titans trailed 13-0 at halftime and had only 64 first-half yards, but once the defense and special teams shifted the momentum, Ward connected with rookie Carnell Tate for an 8-yard touchdown with 13 minutes remaining to tie the score at 13-13.
That was Tate's first NFL touchdown and Tennessee then added a blocked-punt return for a score. The Titans finished with only 186 total yards compared with Indianapolis' 399.
The former Miami standout is still searching for the breakout second season many expected. He is on pace for roughly 2,830 passing yards and only 11 passing touchdowns over 17 games. Last season he threw for 3,169 yards and 15 touchdowns despite playing behind an offense that allowed him to be sacked 55 times. Ward has been sacked only 10 times through six games and was not sacked on Sunday, and he now returns home to face Cleveland next week.
