Former Miami QB weighs in on new Canes signal caller Darian Mensah

Former Miami QB Malik Rosier recently spoke on Darian Mensah. He mentioned Mensah's obvious athleticism, but said what separates him is body control and accuracy when the play breaks down.

"Can you control your body and still throw an accurate pass?" Rosier said, pointing to Mensah's ability to throw off-platform while moving left or right and still hit tight-window throws.

"When you have a guy that's a little more fluid outside the pocket, it just makes the offense a little more explosive and harder to stop."

In 2017, Rosier threw for 3,120 yards and 26 touchdowns and added 468 rushing yards and five rushing scores in 13 games, helping lead Miami to an ACC Coastal title and a No. 2 ranking late in the regular season.

Mensah threw for 3,973 yards with 34 touchdowns and six interceptions at Duke in 2025. ESPN ranked him as the No. 5 overall player in its transfer rankings, and is now slotted to be the third straight transfer QB to start for Miami.

Mensah spent two seasons at Tulane before transferring to Duke, completing 189 of 287 passes (65.9%) for 2,723 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions in 13 games as the Green Wave's starter.

One of the biggest differences between Mensah and Carson Beck is the ability to play off script. Beck was talented in his own right, and he had played in plenty of big games prior to coming to Miami. But, the energy around Mensah does feel different. It's more optimistic. There is a sense of optimism and trust that he can make the highlight plays without fear of turning the ball over at a consistent rate.

Now, whether he can do that against some of the best teams in the ACC, as well as Notre Dame, remains to be seen. But, the sky is the limit for Miami as they gear up for another year trying to win it all.
