Kansas City Chiefs safety Deon Bush — a Miami Hurricanes alum (2012–15) — tore his left Achilles in Saturday’s preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals and is expected to miss the entire 2025 season, head coach Andy Reid confirmed. The injury was reported shortly after the game and reiterated by national outlets.

Kansas City then placed Bush on injured reserve following the diagnosis and corresponding evaluations, and now have a depth vacancy in the secondary.

Bush has been a core special-teams contributor and depth safety during the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl runs. He appeared in two games in 2024 after logging regular-season and postseason snaps the prior few years in that role.

With Bush sidelined, Kansas City will lean on starters Bryan Cook and Chamarri Conner, with Jaden Hicks and Mike Edwards leading the reserve group. Undrafted rookies such as Glendon Miller and Major Williams are candidates to stick as back-end depth and special-teams options.

Drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 4th round (No. 124) of 2016, Bush has appeared in over 100 career games with 3 interceptions and over 100 tackles. He has won two Super Bowls with the Chiefs.

At Miami, Bush posted 168 total tackles, 10 TFL, 4 INT and 13 passes defended across 45 games. In a 36-33 overtime against Nebraska, Bush had one interception, five combined tackles and one PD. Despite the blowout loss to Notre Dame, Bush put on an impressive performance. Against the Fighting Irish he had two forced fumbles, one PD and four combined tackles.

The achilles injury for Bush is a major blow as we have seen multiple players recently battle through it. QB Aaron Rodgers, RB Cam Akers and RB James Robinson are some of the recent examples. Regardless of the tough recovery process, Bush has represented the Miami Hurricanes very well in the NFL.
