Miami and Indiana are about to play in the national championship game, and it's kind of wild how little shared history there is between the programs. Monday's College Football Playoff national championship will be just the third meeting all-time.
Miami-Indiana history
Miami and Indiana are 1-1 head-to-head, with both previous games played at the old Miami Orange Bowl in the mid-1960s. Indiana won the first one 28-14, and Miami answered two years later with a 14-7 win.
This time it's No. 10 seed Miami vs. No. 1 seed Indiana for the national title at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
The 1964 opener: Indiana goes south and wins 28-14
The first Miami-Indiana meeting came in 1964, a season that was a transition point for both programs. Miami was in Year 1 under Charlie Tate, the coach the Hurricanes hired after the 1963 season.
The Hoosiers won 28-14 at the Orange Bowl, leaning on a run-heavy approach that produced 352 rushing yards. Indiana fullback Tom Nowatzke had a 1-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Rich Badar had a 2-yard touchdown run while also throwing a 43-yard touchdown pass to end Joe Sherwood.
That 1964 Indiana team finished 2-7, but Badar was voted the program's most valuable player that season. Miami finished 4-5-1 in Tate's first year.
The 1966 rematch: Miami wins a rainy 14-7 grinder
Two years later, the teams met again in Miami. The Hurricanes, still coached by Tate, were much stronger in 1966. The Hurricanes finished 8-2-1 and were ranked No. 9 in the AP poll at season's end.
Indiana, meanwhile, was in the early stage of the John Pont era. The 1966 Hoosiers went 1-8-1 that season. Miami pulled out a 14-7 win on a rain-soaked night.
Miami will face Indiana in the CFP national championship game
The Miami Hurricanes (13-2, 6-2 ACC) will face off against the Indiana Hoosiers (15-0, 9-0 Big Ten) in the CFP national title game.
