Miami and Ohio State have played five times, with one national title game, one season-opener, and two more modern-era matchups that have led us into where we are today.
On the field, Ohio State owns a 3-2 edge. Officially, the series record gets messy because Ohio State's 2010 win was later vacated as part of NCAA sanctions. So, the official record books have the series tied at 2-2 with one vacated result.
Miami-Ohio State history
The first meeting came Sept. 10, 1977, in Columbus, and it was a defensive grind. Ohio State shut Miami out 10-0 at Ohio Stadium. Miami finished with minus-13 rushing yards and Ohio State forced three turnovers.
On Aug. 29, 1999, the teams opened the season in the Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and Miami won 23-12. It served as an early statement win for a Miami program trying to climb back into the national conversation.
Now for the one everybody remembers. On Jan. 3, 2003, Ohio State beat Miami 31-24 in double overtime in the Fiesta Bowl (also BCS national championship game). Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey threw for 296 yards and Kellen Winslow II had 11 catches for 122 yards.
Late in overtime, a pass interference flag gave Ohio State new life, extending the possession before the Buckeyes scored the winning touchdown. The call still gets argued any time Miami and Ohio State are mentioned in the same sentence.
The series resumed in the regular season on Sept. 11, 2010, Ohio State won 36-24 back in Columbus. Ohio State ripped off 23 points in the second quarter and Miami was playing catch up the rest of the way.
But, the win was vacated by Ohio State. So, yes, the game was played and the score happened on the field, but it does not count in the official win column for the Buckeyes.
The most recent meeting is the following year on Sept. 17, 2011, in Miami Gardens, when the Hurricanes won 24-6. Miami built a 14-0 first-quarter lead and Lamar Miller (184 rushing yards) had a big day, while Ohio State was held to six points and no touchdowns.
