Miami and South Florida have shared a football history that spans seven meetings across two decades, with the Hurricanes owning a 6–1 edge.

Miami vs USF matchup history

The series dates back to 2005, when No. 9 Miami beat USF 27–7 behind Tyrone Moss’ three rushing touchdowns and Greg Olsen’s 72 receiving yards. It was USF’s first crack at Miami and an early introduction to the in-state matchup.

After a three-season pause, the programs reunited in 2009 at Raymond James Stadium. No. 19 Miami controlled it 31–10, with Jacory Harris throwing two touchdowns and Javarris James adding two rushing scores as the Hurricanes rolled up 240 rushing yards and outgained USF 401–220. The victory capped Miami’s first nine-win regular season since 2005.

USF’s breakthrough came the next year and changed Miami’s trajectory. On Nov. 27, 2010 in Miami Gardens, Demetris Murray scored in overtime to give the Bulls a 23–20 win — their first over the Hurricanes — and within hours Miami fired head coach Randy Shannon, ending a four-year run. It remains USF’s only victory in the series and perhaps the most consequential result.

The pendulum swung back immediately. In 2011, Miami won a 6–3 slugfest in Tampa on Jake Wieclaw’s 36-yard field goal as time expired.

A year later in 2012, the Hurricanes routed the Bulls 40–9 in Miami Gardens.

By 2013, Miami’s offense was humming again — the No. 15 Hurricanes smashed USF 49–21 at Raymond James behind a fast start, closing out the initial five-year run of annual meetings (2009–13) with four wins in five tries.

The series resumed after a decade-plus hiatus in 2024 when No. 8 Miami throttled USF 50–15 in Tampa as Cam Ward threw for 404 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the 13th FBS quarterback to surpass 15,000 career passing yards. Jordan Lyle’s 91-yard sprint punctuated a second-half shutout. With that win, Miami extended its streak over USF to four and pushed the all-time series to 6–1.
