Georgia Tech will have starting quarterback Haynes King on Saturday versus Miami. King who missed the last two games with a shoulder injury was cleared to play after being a game-time decision. Georgia Tech completed 47.67 percent of their pass attempts and scored 19 points in the two games without King.
King sustained a shoulder injury during a 41-31 victory against North Carolina on October 12. Without King, Georgia Tech lost to Notre Dame and Virginia Tech before their second bye last week. Redshirt sophomore Zach Pyron had all the passing attempts versus Notre Dame and shared them with true freshman Aaron Philo against Virginia Tech.
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Saturday morning that Philo will be the backup to King on Saturday over Pyron. Philo has completed 14 passes in 31 attempts for 184 yards, no touchdowns, one interception a 101.8 passer rating and two carries for six yards this season.
King leads the ACC completing 71.2 percent of his passes for 1,568 yards, eight TDs and no interceptions with a 152.93 passer rating. King is also a threat as the second-leading rusher for Georgia Tech with 62 carries for 353 yards and six TDs. Miami has to be able to contain King in the pocket.
King completed 12 of 25 pass attempts for 151 yards, one TD, two interceptions and 10 carries for 46 yards and one score. Miami contained King for most of the game in 2024 with 74 yards coming on the now infamous final drive. Defensive coordinator Lance Guidry would be ecstatic to hold King under 100 yards passing on Saturday.
How King plays will have a major impact on how competitive Georgia Tech can be versus Miami. The health of King's should will impact Georgia Tech in the deep passing game and potentially his ability as a runner. Expect Miami to go after his should when King runs on Saturday.
