There is almost a 100 percent chance that Miami will be on the hunt for a big-name quarterback in the transfer portal. One of the names that has been rumored to leave is Arizona State's Sam Leavitt.
Leavitt missed the final five games for the Sun Devils with a major foot injury that required season-ending surgery. Now it looks like he won't be back in Tempe for a third season.

Leavitt led the Sun Devils to a CFP berth in 2024
The 20-year-old Leavitt came on the scene last season when he and running back Cam Skattebo were the catalyst behind an improbable run for Arizona State that resulted in a Big XII championship. The Sun Devils lost to Texas in double overtime of the CFP quarterfinals.
Leavitt had a breakthrough season, throwing for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns with just six interceptions. This season, he threw for 1,628 yards and 10 touchdowns with three interceptions in seven games. Leavitt has also provided a running threat with 816 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in his career. The injury is a Lisfranc ligament tear which requires about 6–7 months of recovery time, which means Leavitt would likely be limited in the spring.
He was a composite four-star recruit out of West Linn, Oregon and signed with Michigan State. Leavitt played in four games with the Spartans before transferring to Arizona State.
The Hurricanes have hit on transfer QBs
If Miami dips into the transfer portal for a starting quarterback, it would be the third consecutive year the Hurricanes have brought in a high-profile player at the position. Two years ago, Cam Ward led the Hurricanes to 10 wins and finished second in Heisman voting before becoming the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Carson Beck joined Miami after four seasons at Georgia and has thrown for 3,072 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the 10-2 Hurricanes. His 74.7 completion percentage is the best in school history, and he'll lead Miami into its first-round CFP matchup against Texas A&M.
Leavitt is expected to be one of several top names at quarterback that will explore new opportunities through the transfer portals. Seven of the 12 teams in this year's CFP bracket have starting quarterbacks from the transfer portal.
