Five teams are ahead of Miami in the week 12 College Football Playoff rankings with two losses. Miami's win over Notre Dame is better than any of the victories of the four teams with two losses ahead of them in the CFP rankings, including the Fighting Irish.
Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, Utah and Vanderbilt are the two-loss teams ahead of Miami in the CFP rankings released on Tuesday night. Among the teams ahead of Miami, Utah is the only one with a worse strength of schedule and Notre Dame is the only team with a worse remaining SOS.
Notre Dame is ninth, Texas 10th, Oklahoma 11, Utah 13th and Vanderbilt 14th in the CFP rankings released on Tuesday. Texas is the only two-loss team ahead of Miami in the CFP rankings that can match the Hurricanes' two wins against other ranked teams.

The best win for Notre Dame in 2025 was over USC. The Trojans were 17th in the CFP rankings released on Tuesday night. USC is 10th in the ESPN Football Power Index. In addition to its loss to Miami, Notre Dame also has a home loss to Texas A&M. Notre Dame is at 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Texas has wins over Oklahoma and Vanderbilt and a loss at Ohio State in 2025. Georgia hosts Texas on Saturday. Texas finishes the season at home versus Arkansas and Texas A&M. If Texas loses one of its three remaining games, they are likely out of the CFP race.
Oklahoma has wins over 18th-ranked Michigan and number 23 Tennessee. Seventh-ranked Mississippi gave Oklahoma its other loss. Oklahoma is at Alabama on Saturday and then hosts Missouri and LSU.
The only win for Utah over a team in the CFP rankings is number 25 Cincinnati. Utah lost to seventh-ranked Texas Tech and number 12 BYU. Baylor hosts Utah on Saturday. Kansas State is at Utah on November 22 and the Utes host Kansas on November 29 to finish the regular season.
Team | CFP Ranking | FPI Ranking | SOS | Remaining SOS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Notre Dame | 9 | 5 | 30 | 66 |
Texas | 10 | 8 | 13 | 4 |
Oklahoma | 11 | 15 | 16 | 8 |
Utah | 13 | 9 | 52 | 49 |
Vanderbilt | 14 | 16 | 20 | 19 |
Miami | 15 | 13 | 39 | 58 |
Vanderbilt lost to fourth-ranked Alabama and Texas in its only games against teams currently in the CFP rankings. After hosting Auburn and Kentucky, Vanderbilt will conclude the regular season at Tennessee on November 29.
Miami needs to beat North Carolina State and win at Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh to conclude the regular season, or all the comparisons are moot. Texas, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt all have remaining games as underdogs. That would put Miami 12th in the CFP rankings. Miami probably has to be 11th in the rankings to earn a CFP berth.
The top five conference champions earn a CFP berth. That likely means the ACC Champion and top Group of Five team would be ahead of Miami in earning a CFP berth. Miami earning a spot in the ACC Championship game is more of a long shot now than making the CFP.
