So you've been asked to join a fantasy football league that you don't care about. Or you are in a league that doesn't have a last-place punishment. Either way, you've decided to fill your roster with Miami Hurricanes alumni and you're wondering if that is even possible, and if it is, what's the best way to go about it?
Well, you've come to the right place. And fair warning, this is probably not the best way to compete, but if you are truly a Miami Hurricanes superfan, it is certainly a fun way to compete. The draft strategy is going to be built on the QBs — hopefully your league has a superflex — and reaching on every skill player to the point where your league mates will look at you like you're a psychopath. If this is the route you choose to go, here is the best way to go about it.
Quarterback
Cam Ward, Tennessee Titans
The most obvious choice and best player available from Miami is going to be Cam Ward. Is he a first-round pick? No. But this is what you signed up for so you’ll have to commit from the very start if you want to end up with more than 50 points per game.
Ward threw for 3,169 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. He also had 159 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, which could make up for the lack of RB production that we'll address later. A jump is expected for year 2 and Tennessee has continued to invest in the offense.
Running Back
Travis Homer, Pittsburgh Steelers
This is exactly where things get rough. And it is not recommended that you draft either of these RBs until all of the other positions are taken care of (including the bench). Homer saw almost no offensive volume in 2025 and finished with negligible fantasy points.
Damien Martinez, Green Bay Packers
The 2025 seventh-round pick spent most of his rookie year on practice squads and recorded no meaningful fantasy production. But in typical fantasy leagues there will be two RB starters, so Martinez is really the only option. This situation would have been a lot better if Mark Fletcher had left for the draft, but that is simply an alternate reality for this fantasy hypothetical.
Wide Receiver
Xavier Restrepo, Tennessee Titans
Restrepo's college chemistry with Ward is his strongest asset. After going undrafted in 2025 he earned limited snaps late in the year, finishing with three catches for 41 yards. He is the best pure receiving option among current Hurricanes alumni but he remains undrafted in most leagues.
Wide Receiver
CJ Daniels, Los Angeles Rams
Daniels was a sixth-round pick by the Rams after a solid final college season in Coral Gables (50 catches, 557 yards, seven touchdowns). He's currently buried on a depth chart that features Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.
Still, he's one of the few recent Hurricanes actually on an NFL roster with a realistic shot at contributing in the passing game.
Tight End
David Njoku, Los Angeles Chargers
Njoku had an injury-limited 2025 season with Cleveland, but he still posted 33 receptions for 293 yards and four touchdowns across 12 games. And honestly, now that he is with the Chargers, that might go down. It's not looking great for the offense outside of Ward at this point.
Kicker
Andy Borregales, New England Patriots
Borregales converted 27 of 32 field goals and 53 of 55 extra points. He is the starter for the Patriots and this will be one of the most reliable scoring options for your Miami-only squad. Definitely scoop him up early because he is going to be the No. 2 scoring option in most weeks.
Defense/Special Teams
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
You might have to stream defense/special teams throughout the year, but if there was one recommendation for Miami fans it would be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On Sundays, Canes fans who have the Bucs defense will get to watch the Rueben Bain experience and see what that can do for them in fantasy. They also have Keionte Scott so that's another plus.
Bench Depth
The bench will be crucial because if anyone from Miami has a breakout season, you need to make sure that they are on the squad. Granted, with this team you will probably always have priority for waiver claims so maybe it doesn't matter if you actually draft them or not.
Carson Beck is going to start games for the Arizona Cardinals this season. Let's hope that he is starting the week that Ward is off on a bye (Week 9). Maybe he even shocks the world and becomes a viable option.
Other bench depth suggestions
- Elijah Arroyo (Seattle Seahawks) offers tight-end depth behind Njoku.
- Braxton Berrios (New York Giants) could see increased snaps with injuries.
