It feels like Jai Lucas and Miami Hurricanes basketball are just getting started. The 2025-26 season came to a close Sunday afternoon with a 10-point loss to Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament, but Lucas is only 37 years old and has a lot left in the tank.

That's why there's so much optimism around Coral Gables right now. Yes, the loss to Purdue was disappointing, and the Hurricanes had their chances before a short stretch flipped the game out of their favor. But Lucas is a winner, and he's building a winner that will continue to compete at the top level of the ACC.

"I felt like this could be a special place. And that's why when the job opened I kind of did everything I could to get involved. I'll say that that way," Lucas said. "And then once I got to meet the people, once I got to meet Dan and Brian and Joe and the administration and the support system that we have at Miami, it was a no-brainer."

With Jai Lucas, the future of Hurricanes basketball is bright

Lucas has been a perfect fit for Miami basketball, which was reeling a bit following the departure of Jim Larranaga just a few years after taking the Hurricanes to the Final Four. He came into Coral Gables with a vision and added some amazing young talent like freshmen Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen. There's no reason to think Lucas will not continue to add pieces and recruit at a high level until the Hurricanes achieve the ultimate goal.

"Now it's my job to keep it going and keep it rolling, where this time next year we're talking about going to the Sweet 16, not just the season ending," Lucas added. "So that's the goal, that's the plan, until you win National Championships."

In just one season, Lucas gave Miami an identity on the court and a plan to follow that will lead to continued success. Now we excitedly wait to see what happens next.
