University of Miami Sports Hall of Famer Ken Dorsey was fired from his second consecutive job as an offensive coordinator in the NFL following the conclusion of the 2024 season. Dorsey spent one season as the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns before being dismissed.
As the Miami Hurricanes search for a new defensive coordinator, some fans want Dorsey to return to Miami to run the offense. Miami was first nationally averaging 43.9 points per game and led the country with 537.2 total yards per contest. The Hurricanes had the best offensive unit in the country in 2024.
Some Miami supporters have questioned the quarterback development behind 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist Cam Ward. Miami backup QB Emory Williams completed five passes in 14 attempts for 26 yards with no touchdowns and one interception during the second half of the 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
Miami ran for 308 yards versus Iowa State. Without Ward at QB in 2025, expect Miami to be more balanced offensively. Miami was 31st nationally during the 2024 season averaging 188.92 rushing yards per game. Miami returns Mark Fletcher Jr. and Jordan Lyle at running back in 2025.
Miami legend Ken Dorsey was recently fired by the Cleveland Browns as OC
Browns general manager Andrew Berry spoke about the hiring process with Dorsey last year. Berry praised Dorsey and expects him to be a successful coach in the future. Cleveland was 32nd in points scored on offense, 28th in total offense, 29th in rushing and 22nd in passing during the 2024 season.
Dorsey led highly ranked offenses in two seasons as the coordinator in Buffalo. The Bills finished second in points and total yards, 15th in rushing yards and seventh in passing yards during their first season with Dorsey as offensive coordinator in 2022. Those numbers mostly dipped in 2023.
Buffalo was sixth in the NFL in offensive points scored in 2023, fourth in total yards, seventh in rushing yards and eighth in passing yards. Dorsey will likely look to stay in the NFL. There are multiple teams with head coaching positions open. Any of those teams could seek Dorsey out as offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach.
The greatest success for Dorsey as a coach was mentoring QBs from 2013 through 2017 with the Carolina Panthers. Cam Newton won the NFL Most Valuable Player in 2015 with Dorsey as his QB coach. Dorsey was fired with Carolina offensive coordinator Mike Shula following the 2017 season.
Miami is unlikely to hire a new offensive coordinator. Under Shannon Dawson, Ward just completed the best season by a QB in Miami program history. Dawson has a big challenge of mentoring the replacement for Ward. Williams will be Ward's successor unless Miami adds a transfer QB.
