Keys to Miami making its first ACC Championship Game since 2017
The Miami Hurricanes are just one win away from their first appearance in the ACC Championship Game since 2017. Given the program's proud and storied history in Miami football, their recent lack of success is surprising.
Winning one more game would not only propel Miami into the conference title game but could also mark their first appearance in the College Football Playoffs. So, what steps can Miami take to defeat the Syracuse Orange and ensure that this season is not wasted?
Limit the passing game
Miami's defense has struggled all year. One of their biggest challenges will come on Saturday when they face Kyle McCord, the top passer in the country by yardage. McCord has an embarrassment of riches in the passing game.
Oronde Gadsden II has 65 receptions, for 810 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Jackson Meeks has 66 receptions for 801 yards and five TDs. Trebor Pena has 73 receptions, for 743 yards and six touchdowns. Additionally, running back LeQuint Allen is utilized as a safety valve, with 55 receptions for 423 yards and three TDs.
McCord is averaging almost 360 yards a game through the air, and he could certainly throw for that much or more against Miami's suspect secondary. The safeties and corners will need to tighten up and limit the damage done through the air if Miami wants a good shot at winning.
