Pound the rock

Syracuse has been susceptible to the ground game on defense this year. Through 11 games, they're giving up 153.6 yards per game and have surrendered 15 touchdowns on the ground. Teams are averaging 5.2 yards per carry against the Orange defense in 2024.

Running backs Damien Martinez, Mark Fletcher Jr., and Jordan Lyle need to play a significant role in the Miami game plan by offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. Given Syracuse's offensive capabilities, it's essential to control time of possession and keep their offense on the sidelines for as long as possible.

As great as Cam Ward and Miami's receivers are, the last thing you want is three incompletions to force a three-and-out after taking just 20 or so seconds off the clock.

There's always the possibility, of course, that Miami's run game doesn't get going and Ward throws for 400 yards and three touchdowns in a big win. But the better course of action would be to rely on your running backs to dominate time of possession and rack up big yards against the Syracuse defense.

Conclusion

A lot of these keys are easier said than done. But if Miami's defense does its job and the offense controls the ball and time of possession, the Hurricanes will be playing in the ACC Championship Game. Considering the consequences if they lose to Syracuse, this is a must-win game for the Canes.
