The dollars and cents are making sense for Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Malachi Toney. Fresh off his incredible freshman season at The U, Toney looks to be capitalizing on something college players from yesteryear never could. All signs are pointing to Toney switching jersey numbers ahead of his second year with the team. Toney had 109 catches for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns in the No. 10.

During a recent Miami Heat game, Toney was given a custom No. 1 Heat jersey instead of his No. 10...

Going from the No. 10 to the No. 1 makes sense. It is all about The U at Miami. This is a program where stars are forged in South Florida for all the world to see. With Toney being arguably the best non-quarterback in the country, alongside Jeremiah Smith at Ohio State, maybe he can win the Heisman instead of Duke transfer Darian Mensah? He does have a strong connection with Cooper Barkate...

With Toney required to be in college for two more years, look for him to keep making the most of it.

All signs point to Malachi Toney switching uniform numbers at Miami

Were you paying close attention? With former Miami wide receiver Joshisa Trader transferring to North Carolina State in-conference, that frees up the No. 1 jersey to be used on the offensive side of the ball at Miami. Linebacker Mohamed Toure wore it on defense last season, but the Rutgers transfer was a graduate student a year ago. Toney saw the opportunity to go back to his high school number.

Toney wore No. 1 when starring at American Heritage over in Plantation. Obviously, Trader had been with Miami the year before Toney arrived on campus, so he would have had seniority over the No. 1 jersey. While Toney may feel more comfortable in the No. 1, he still did extraordinary things in the No. 10... Really what this is all about is simple: Money. Toney could make more by switching up numbers.

Ask yourself this. What do people like? New. That is because they are of the belief that new is always better. That is not always the case, but people rarely think for themselves. If somebody bought a No. 10 Toney jersey, they may want a No. 10 more than anything in the world to wear in the next two seasons. If they do not have a Toney uniform, then there is even more of an opportunity to get one.

There is also this... What number did Mensah wear the last few seasons quarterbacking the Duke Blue Devils and the Tulane Green Wave? That is right. He wore No. 10, which was Toney's jersey at Miami last year. Since he is obviously the marquee transfer coming into Miami this year, obviously, he will want to keep his jersey numbers consistent. As for Toney, he will happily take his high school number.

With no real threat on the roster to take the No. 1 jersey, expect for Toney to wear it in 2026 and 2027.
