One of the biggest storylines for the Miami Hurricanes during this recruiting period has been the search for an elite pass rusher. That story took a big step toward completion when five-star prospect Jaiden Bryant committed to Miami, flipping from LSU after taking his official visit to Coral Gables.
In a perfect world, Mario Cristobal would like to avoid that sort of drama when it comes to finding edge rushers in the 2028 recruiting class. That was one of the positions that was under the spotlight this past weekend at the Legends Camp and the primary target the staff was looking at was in-state prospect Asher Ghioto.

Miami could be the team to beat for 5-star EDGE Asher Ghioto
Ghioto, who is listed at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, is currently ranked as the top edge rusher in the 2028 class. The prospect from the Bolles School in Jacksonville isn't ready to make any decisions yet, but the Hurricanes will be in the mix with programs like Texas A&M, Clemson, Florida and FSU in that early group. Ghioto has been offered by nearly every top program in the country, so we'll see what his future holds as he visits several programs on the camp circuit.Â
It's easy to take high school stats with a grain of salt because they aren't professionally done and never verified, but Ghioto is listed with having 23 sacks as a sophomore at Bolles. Even if that number is off by a few sacks, that's still the sign of a prospect that's completely unblockable. Expect Cristobal and Hurricanes defensive ends coach Jason Taylor to take a very special interest in Ghioto with the hopes of getting him into the fold as soon as possible.Â
Miami is still trying to figure out the edge rushing situation for the 2027 recruiting class
The flip of Bryant should put many Miami fans at ease because he was one of three primary flip targets left on Cristobal's list. Right now, it's Bryant and in-state prospect Jayvon Dawson as the edge rushers in the class. That's pretty good right there and my guess is that Cristobal and Taylor have another developmental player in mind that they are evaluating. But we all know that Plan A is DJ Jacobs, the Ohio State commit that can't seem to keep Miami off his mind.Â
We don't know what's happening with Jacobs these days. There are rumors that he has already been to Coral Gables during this official visit season, but nothing is confirmed. The belief was that he would take an official visit to Miami, but Jacobs keeps everything close to the vest.
While the Hurricanes staff waits to see what happens with their top target in the 2027 class, they already know who they want their edge guy to be in 2028, but they don't want the chase for Ghioto to last as long.Â
