Always be 'crootin'. One of the biggest reasons why Mario Cristobal was destined for success in leading his alma mater of Miami is he knows the region so well. He is from South Florida and played for The U in the early 1990s. While his two previous head-coaching posts had their ups and downs at Oregon and Florida International, Cristobal is in his bag back at Miami. He knows what he is doing...

When asked by J.D. PicKell of On3 about Miami's recruiting prowess in-state, Cristobal offered this.

“We don’t get into negative recruiting, but people always negative recruit us and that’s fine. No one should ever take that personally. Let’s just let it play out.”

Here is everything Cristobal said to PicKell in response to recruiting for Miami in the state of Florida.

It was a very poignant and well-thought-out response by Cristobal. One of the best traits he has firmly established at Miami is being so good in front of a microphone. He has entrusted his staff to make a difference every day and twice on Saturdays. Cristobal does not feel the need to negatively recruit against other schools like so many do Miami because he is being authentically himself here.

This kind of quite self-confidence gives Miami plenty of leg to stand on, while it makes another climb.

Mario Cristobal puts negative recruiters in their place with these remarks

For Cristobal to calmly say that his team operates above the fray is exactly the type of response you should be hoping out of a Power Four head coach. Obviously, everyone is different, and not everybody possesses the same emotional intelligence as Cristobal does. At his core, he is a developer of offensive lineman and a recruiter. He connects with people in a way that most never do.

The thing that really stands out from this clip is Cristobal seems to be well-aware that he is the only head coach of note in the state of Florida who played at the school he coaches. Being at one's alma mater is something that can be so hard to quantify in these sort of things, but it does matter a ton. Again, this all comes down to authenticity. Crisotbal is who he is, and that seems to land with recruits.

Ultimately, he has become more and more likable with each passing season at Miami. While he was always the Hurricanes' guy, he did need a little bit more time to have the national media fall in love with the former Oregon head coach. His ability to take a hard question thrown his way and answer it with clarity, grace, and professionalism is something most people cannot do. This is why he has this job.

For now, look for Miami to continue to clean up in high school recruitment under Cristobal's regime.
