Mario Cristobal has previous bowl history versus Matt Campbell and Iowa State

The last bowl win for Iowa State came over Mario Cristobal when he was coaching Oregon after the 2020 season.

Mario Cristobal will face Matt Campbell and Iowa State in a bowl game for the second time in three seasons when Miami plays the Cyclones in the Pop Tarts Bowl on December 28 in Orlando. The last Iowa State bowl win was a 34-17 victory in the 2021 Fiesta Bowl when Cristobal coached Oregon.

Miami has not won a bowl game since beating West Virginia 31-14 in the 2016 Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. History will repeat itself in some manner when Iowa State and Miami play in the 2024 Pop Tarts Bowl. Iowa State is 5-13 all-time in bowl games and Miami is 19-23.

Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, defensive line coach Joe Salave'a and strength and condition coach Aaron Feld were on the 2020 Oregon staff and made the move with Cristobal to Miami. The 2021 Fiesta Bowl was the last postseason game Cristobal coached at Oregon.

Cristobal was 35-13 overall and 23-9 in the Pac-12 in four seasons as Oregon's head coach. Although they made the Fiesta Bowl, 2020 was the worst season for Cristobal at Oregon. Oregon finished the regular season 4-2. Oregon only played in the 2020 Pac-12 Championship after North Division Champion Washington had to drop out.

After Washington had a Covid outbreak, Oregon upset 5-0. 13th ranked USC 31-24 in Los Angeles to earn the Pac-12's automatic berth to a New Year's six bowl game. Iowa State won the Big XII with an 8-1 conference record and were 9-2 overall entering the Fiesta Bowl versus Oregon.

The 2021 Fiesta Bowl was mostly decided in the second quarter. Iowa State led 14-7 before they combined with Oregon to score 24 points in the final 3:17 of the first half. Oregon tied the game at 14 on a 16-yard touchdown run by quarterback Anthony Brown with 3:17 left in the second quarter.

Quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Breece Hall scored one-yard touchdowns 17 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the first half to give Iowa State control of the game. The Cyclones got an extra possession after recovering the kickoff following the Purdy TD.

Iowa State had two second half field goals for the final margin. Three Oregon turnovers stopped any chance for a comeback in the second half. Iowa State dominated the time of possession holding the ball for 42:48 while holding Oregon to 86 yards rushing. Purdy was the Fiesta Bowl Most Valuable Player.

Purdy threw for 156 yards and a TD and ran for 39 yards and another score. Hall had 136 yards rushing and two TDs. Brown and Taylor Shough who played for Louisville against Miami this season, combined for 226 passing yards, no TDs and one interception. Iowa State held Oregon to 82 yards in the second half.

Mario Cristobal enters the Pop-Tarts Bowl with a 3-4 bowl record. Miami lost 31-24 to Rutgers in the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl. Cristobal was 1-1 in Bowl Games at Florida International, 2-2 at Oregon and 0-1 at Miami. Campbell is 4-5 in bowl games and 2-4 in the postseason at Iowa State.
