During an appearance on the Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal provided an update on how quarterback Carson Beck is recovering after surgery to repair a torn UCL he suffered while playing for Georgia last season. Cristobal spoke with former Clemson offensive lineman Eric Mac Lain.
Beck missed spring practice with the injury to his elbow that he suffered in the SEC Championship Game with Georgia against Texas. Cristobal discussed Beck's rehab process, when he might be ready to throw and get full clearance and who he is working with to make those determinations.
Miami concluded spring practice on April 12. Cristobal stated after the spring game that he was looking forward to Beck participating in the player-led practices, which began last Monday Beck was expected to be cleared for all 16 player-led practices plus throwing on his own with players, per Cristobal.
Cristobal elaborated about Beck, "You've seen enough film of him over two years to know when he's surrounded with the right pieces and the right scheme, he knows how to do it at a really high level." Beck is expected to play behind a better offensive line with Miami. Beck also had to deal with a high number of drops from Georgia receivers in 2024.
"His rehab process is taking him through the spring. He is throwing some balls...in a very light manner, in the next week or so...He's reaching full clearance in the next couple of weeks...Our return-to-play progress and our return-to-play specialist is...detailed guy that really works hand in hand with surgeons, with specialists, with everybody involved in that one particular player's circle...He's got him ahead of schedule and he is extremely smart, great presence."Miami head coach Mario Cristobal
Beck has been able to work with offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to learn the Miami system while recovering from his injury. Miami has an extremely young wide receiver corps other than C.J. Daniels, who transferred from LSU during the winter portal.
The player-led practices will allow Beck the opportunity to get healthy, work with his new teammates physically and continue to develop in the Dawson offense. The process, as should be expected under Cristobal, is extremely detailed for Beck. The updates on Beck should continue throughout the spring and summer into August training camp.
