Mario Cristobal's non-update on Marquise Lightfoot does little to calm worried Miami fans

The Hurricanes coach isn't saying anything

If there's one thing you've learned about Mario Cristobal thus far, it's that he isn't saying anything more about a player's status than he needs to. And with the Miami Hurricanes on a bye in Week 6, don't expect the coach to give up anything on Marquise Lightfoot.

Lightfoot, who has established himself as the Hurricanes' top pass rusher, was injured in the first half against the Clemson Tigers and didn't return. His status for upcoming games isn't known, and Cristobal won't be meeting with the media much this week, so he decided to table the issue.

Mario Cristobal is being predictably coy on Marquise Lightfoot's injury

There's been very little intel about Lightfoot's injury or when it happened - just reports that he was in the locker room, and it eventually became clear that he would not return. No injury is good, but the timing of this one specifically stinks because Lightfoot was really starting to get after it, and the whole Hurricanes pass rush has just looked different over the past few weeks.

Miami will face Florida State after the bye week, and Ashton Daniels is the type of player who can crumble under a rush because he's such a terrible passer. However, the Hurricanes will have to tackle Daniels in those situations because he can be a dynamic runner with some athletic traits.

Injuries have been an issue for Miami since opening week at Stanford, when the Hurricanes lost both starting cornerbacks, OJ Frederique and Xavier Lucas. We assume that Frederique is done for the season, or the regular season at least, and Cristobal has teased a return for Lucas, possibly as early as the FSU game. And there's also the injury status of another cornerback, Ja'Boree Antoine, who was expected to be the No. 3 cornerback this season, but remains sidelined with something.

There are other injuries to keep an eye on as well. Offensive linemen Max Buchanan and Matthew McCoy both left for stretches of the game but returned, and McCoy toughed it out with a shoulder harness. Another cornerback, Ethan O'Connor, was also out for a period of time, which forced Corey Hetherman to do more tinkering with the secondary.

"We had a lot of guys go down. It's an awful year for us, unfortunately. Keep our guys in your prayers," Cristobal said. "Hopefully they'll heal up and be in a good spot. But the resiliency of our team continued to show up, not only in the form of that, but in the guys that had to step up and just kept going."

The bye week couldn't have come at a better time, and Cristobal can only hope the Hurricanes will be healthier for what is going to be a fairly challenging second half of the season. But he'll continue to adjust the roster as needed and offer up as little information as possible.
