Miami is off to a good start in the 2025 transfer portal with the additions of safety Zechariah Poyser from Jacksonville State and wide receiver C.J. Daniels from LSU. The secondary and wide receiver are likely to be positions Miami targets heavily through the transfer portal.

Miami needs to improve an often maligned secondary. The Hurricanes were 53rd nationally allowing 209, 8 points per game, 41st with a 122.14 opponents' passer rating, 38th allowing 6.6 yards per attempt and 25th holding opposing quarterbacks to a 57.4 completion percentage.

Those numbers do not tell the entire story. The propensity to give up big plays hurt Miami often throughout the season. Miami was 107th allowing opponents six plays of 50 or more yards. Four of those 50-yard plays came in the 39-38 win at California when Miami rallied from a 39-38 deficit.

Miami loses wide receivers Jacolby George and Xavier Restrepo who are out of eligiblity and Isaiah Horton who entered the transfer portal. The Hurricanes could also be without Sam Brown who has one season of eligiblity remaining and the option of entering the 2025 NFL Draft.

Poyserhad 75 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, 11 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in 2024. Gaby Urrutia of Inside the U reported Poyser played 808 defensive snaps within the box or as a big nickel and he"was targeted 68 times, allowing 32 receptions for 310 yards and three touchdowns."

Miami has hosted multiple players on campus since the transfer portal opened. Expect more commitments to come in the next few weeks. The winter transfer portal closes on December 28. That is the last day players can enter the transfer portal. There is no deadline for when players can enroll at their new schools.

Expect more players to continue entering the transfer portal as bowl games conclude and teams in the College Football Playoff are eliminated. Players in the CFP have five days after their teams are eliminated to enter the transfer portal.
