The San Diego Padres selected Miami left-handed pitcher Rob Evans with the No. 365 overall pick in the 12th round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Sunday, closing out a four-player Hurricanes draft class and rewarding one of the best turnaround stories on Miami's roster.
Evans his college career at Chipola in 2023, where he went 4-4 with a 5.46 ERA. He struck out 70 batters in 56 innings.

San Diego Padres select Miami left-hander Rob Evans after All-America season
He transferred to Georgia State in 2024 and became the Panthers' top starter. Evans went 3-2 with a 5.62 ERA in 11 starts and struck out 48 batters in 48 innings. He worked six innings in three starts that season, including an eight-strikeout win at Western Carolina.
Evans arrived at Miami in 2025 and spent his first season in Coral Gables in a limited role. He made 17 appearances, threw 15.1 innings and posted a 4.70 ERA with 14 strikeouts and nine walks.
In 2026, Evans became Miami's Friday starter and the anchor of the rotation, finishing 10-3 with a 3.29 ERA over 87.2 innings. He struck out 98 batters, held opponents to a .210 batting average and posted a 1.12 WHIP. He became Miami's first 10-game winner since Brian Van Belle did it in 2019.
Some of his best outings came during highly important moments for Miami. In April, Evans threw a career-high 7.2 innings at Stanford, allowing two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in a 6-3 Miami win. A month later, he beat Stanford again in the ACC Tournament, allowing two earned runs over seven innings with six strikeouts as Miami won 11-2.
Evans was the fourth player out of Miami selected in the 2026 MLB draft, joining Daniel Cuvet, Alex Sosa and Ryan Bilka.
