Greg Rousseau has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September, the first monthly award of his NFL career, after a start the league has almost never seen from an edge rusher.

The Buffalo Bills outside linebacker finished the month with 15 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six sacks, three forced fumbles and a pass defensed in three games. The six sacks lead the league and he is also tied for the league lead in forced fumbles.

Buffalo is 3-0, and Rousseau has had two sacks in every one of those wins.

He had two sacks and two forced fumbles with four tackles in the opener at Houston, then two sacks and a forced fumble with three tackles against Detroit. He ended the month with eight tackles and two sacks in Buffalo's 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rousseau became the third player since 1982, when the sack became an official statistic, to record two or more sacks in each of his team’s first three games, joining Mark Gastineau, who did it with the New York Jets in 1984, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene, who did it with Carolina in 1998.

This is Rousseau's first Defensive Player of the Month award, and it makes him the fifth Bills linebacker to win it, after Lorenzo Alexander in October 2016, Cornelius Bennett in October 1988, Sam Cowart in November 2000 and Paup in November 1995. It also makes him the fourth former Miami linebacker to take the honor, joining Jessie Armstead in October 1999, Jon Beason in October 2008 and Ray Lewis in November 2003.

Kansas City running back Kenneth Walker won the AFC offensive award for September, and Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson took the special teams award.
