Miami and former WR Cam Vaughn won't go to court after Canes submit transfer paperwork

The University of Miami has submitted a legislative relief waiver so former wide receiver Cam Vaughn can enter the NCAA transfer portal, and Vaughn has dropped his lawsuit against the school.

Will Turboff of A&P Sports (Vaughn's agent), said that Miami filed the request with the NCAA and that Vaughn had withdrawn his claims. Vaughn sued the university and the NCAA in Miami-Dade County on Tuesday after coach Mario Cristobal announced on Aug. 17 that he had been dismissed.

His representatives said Miami canceled his scholarship without a written explanation, a cited rule violation or a hearing, and then refused to submit the waiver a dismissed player needs to enter the portal outside the regular window. The suit asked a judge to order that filing, but Miami went on ahead and submitted the paperwork instead.

Vaughn transferred from West Virginia in January and never played a snap for the Hurricanes.  Vaughn was unhappy with his place on the depth chart after Cooper Barkate followed quarterback Darian Mensah from Duke and younger receivers moved ahead of him.

Vaughn was also arrested in Georgia in July on a reckless driving charge. He was driving 96 mph in a 55 mph zone, changing lanes and passing traffic with passengers in the car. The arrest was one factor, but not the only one. Running back Jordan Lyle had a similar charge and remains on the roster.

Vaughn has 83 receptions for 1,344 yards and nine touchdowns in 29 games at Jacksonville State and West Virginia. He caught 35 passes for 541 yards and four touchdowns last season at West Virginia after recording 803 yards and five touchdowns as a redshirt freshman at Jacksonville State.

The NCAA still must process the waiver before Vaughn can sign with another school for the 2026 season.
