Miami Hurricanes baseball has landed first baseman Brylan West from in-state rival Florida International University (FIU). West, a standout sophomore, entered the transfer portal and committed to Miami.
West's 2025 season at FIU was impressive, as he posted a .336 batting average, hit 12 home runs, and accumulated 29 RBIs. His performance earned him First Team All-USA honors. If West had been a part of Miami's roster during the 2025 season his 12 home runs would have ranked second on the team, only behind Golden Spikes semifinalist Daniel Cuvet. Additionally, his batting average would have placed him fourth among Hurricanes hitters.
The acquisition of West addresses a key area for the Hurricanes. While Miami's first basemen, Todd Hudson and Renzo Gonzalez, have been defensively reliable, their offensive contributions have been modest. West's addition is anticipated to bring a balance of defensive stability and offensive firepower to the position.
Head coach J.D. Arteaga and his staff have been proactive in strengthening the roster, even amid postseason play. The commitment from West marks the first addition for the Hurricanes ahead of the 2026 season, signaling the program's intent to build upon its recent successes. Miami's 2025 campaign has shown promise with their advancement to the Regional Finals.
West's transition from FIU to Miami also adds an intriguing layer to the local baseball landscape. The rivalry between the two programs is well-established. His decision to join the Hurricanes not only strengthens Miami's lineup but also shows the program's appeal within the region.
Miami got a win on Saturday night against Columbia, 14-1. Dorian Gonzalez drove in eight runs and Griffin Hugus pitched a complete game, putting Miami in the Hattiesburg Regional Final. Miami will now play in their first regional final since losing to Texas a couple years ago. Another victory tonight, in a game against the winner of Columbia-Southern Mississippi, would advance Miami to the Super Regional.
