Miami can indefinitely hold the Florida Cup with a win at Florida State on Saturday. The Florida Cup is awarded when Florida, Florida State and Miami play a round robin during the same season that includes bowl games.
The Florida Cup originated in 2002. Florida and Florida State play annually. Awarding the Florida Cup depends on Florida and Miami playing. Between 1958 and 1987, Florida, Florida State and Miami played a round-robin in every season except 1961, 1967 and 1968.
Before the Florida Cup was awarded, Florida was 36-16 in the above years posted, plus 2000, Miami was 23-29 and Florida State was 22-30. Florida, Florida State and Miami have played round robins from 2002 through 2004, 2008, 2013, 2019 and 2024 and 2025 since the inception of the Florida Cup.
Miami is 11-4 against Florida and Florida State since the inception of the Florida Cup. Florida is 6-8 and Florida State is 5-10 in the eight years that the Florida Cup has been held. Miami won the Florida Cup from 2002 through 2004 and in 2024.

Florida and Miami are not scheduled to play in the future. With the ACC going to nine conference games beginning in 2026, it will be more difficult for Florida and Miami to schedule games against each other in the future. The ACC will require conference teams to play one power opponent each season in the future.
Miami has a power conference opponent or Notre Dame scheduled through 2032. Miami has three non-conference opponents scheduled through 2028. With four non-conference games scheduled in 2026, Miami will likely have to alter its schedule to fit the criteria of playing nine conference games.
One ACC Football program each year will play eight games. With 17 conference teams, a schedule of every team playing nine conference games is not feasible. If Miami wins on Saturday at Florida State, the Hurricanes will retain the Florida Cup for the foreseeable future unless they play the Gators in a bowl game.
