Miami continues the theme of dominant second halves beating Duke
Miami had the ball for 9:15 in the fourth quarter and forced Virginia Tech into a three-and-out in the first drive. The Hurricanes scored three TDs and had 216 yards on their final three drives of the games versus the Hokies. Virginia Tech went nine plays and 45 yards on its final drive, ending in the now infamous reversed Hail Mary.
Miami outgained Virginia Tech 272 to 165 in the second half and outscored the Hokies 21-10 in the final 30 minutes. Virginia Tech had a field goal, a fake field goal stopped after a long interception return deep into Miami territory and they were forced to punt before the final play of the game. Miami won the game in the second half.
Miami fell behind 35-10 with 8:06 left in the second half. The Hurricanes went on a 29-3 run after that. After Miami scored a TD to cut the deficit to 35-18, California made a field goal to extend the lead to 38-18. California had 13 plays for 29 yards on their last three drives. Miami scored TDs on its last four drives before a one-play kneeldown.
Miami needed a six-play, 92-yard drive in 1:16 after taking possession with 1:28 left at California to complete the 39-38 win. The Hurricanes outgained the Golden Bears 278-26 in the fourth quarter to rally from 35-10 down in the second half and from a 38-18 deficit entering the final 15 minutes.
