Miami outscored Stanford 44-30 in the second half to earn a 79-70 win on Wednesday night in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes improved to 17-4 overall and 6-2 in the ACC with the win. Miami scored the first seven points of the game and led 11-2 before the Cardinal rallied to lead 40-35 at halftime.
Miami twice had a 10-point lead in the first half. Stanford closed the first half on a 14-4 run. Ebuka Okorie led the first-half charge for Stanford with 11 points. The Cardinal shot 51.6 percent from the field in the first half and made seven out of 14 3-point attempts.
Tre Donaldson and Malik Reneau led Miami with 13 points each in the first half. Stanford eventually extended their halftime lead to nine twice early in the second half. After falling behind 49-40, Miami went on a 27-9 run to take a 67-59 lead with 2:46 left.
Miami had great balance in the second half with six players scoring at least five points, led by Tru Washington with 10 points. Reneau led Miami with 20 points, Donaldson had 18 with freshman Shelton Henderson and Washington finishing with 12 each.
Improved defense won the game for Miami against Stanford
Miami held Stanford to 35.5 percent from the field in the second half. Stanford did make four of their 10 3-point field goal attempts after halftime. Stanford finished shooting 43.5 percent from the field, but made 11 out of its 24 3-point attempts.
Miami shot 47.4 percent from the floor and made six out of its 15 3-point shots. The Hurricanes partially won the game from the free throw line by making 19 out of 31 while Stanford made five out of 10 from the line.
Miami also finished with a 39-30 rebounding edge, 17-8 advantage in points off of turnovers and outscored Stanford 38-24 on points in the paint and 13-0 on fast break points. Okorie led four Stanford players in double figures with 19 and Benny Gealer scored 17.
After starting 5-2, Miami has won 12 out of its last 14 games. Miami hosts California at 4 p.m. on Saturday, with the game to be broadcast on the ACC Network. Miami is currently tied for third in the ACC with Virginia and North Carolina State. Duke leads the ACC at 8-0 and Clemson is second at 7-1.
