David Hale of ESPN posted stats on X illustrating how dominant Miami has been on both lines of scrimmage over the past three seasons. Miami was first among Power Four teams in pressure rate allowed and non-blitz pressure rate defensively in 2025, according to Hale.
Hale further mentioned since 2017, only 18 teams have ranked in the top 10 in pressure rate allowed and non-blitz pressure rate in the same season. Miami has accomplished the above three seasons in a row, per Hale. Cristobal, offensive line coach Alex Mirabal and defensive line coach Jason Taylor have built dominance on the line of scrimmage.
Using more traditional stats, Miami was fifth nationally, allowing 3.63 tackles for loss and 16th, permitting 1.25 sacks per game in 2025. Miami was 25th, averaging 6.38 TFLs per game and fourth, posting 3.13 sacks per game in 2025.
During their four-game run in the College Football Playoffs, Miami allowed 16 TFLs and nine sacks. Miami had 23 TFLs and 16 sacks in its four CFP Games. Mississippi was the only CFP opponent to win the line of scrimmage stats against Miami with five TFLs and four sacks, while holding Miami to one each.
How good has Miami been on the line of scrimmage under Mario Cristobal?

Last year, Canes ranked No. 1 in P4 in pressure rate allowed & No. 1 in non-blitz pressure rate on defense.
Since 2017, only 18 teams have ranked in top 10 in both. Miami's done it 3 years in a row.
Line of scrimmage validation came in the 2026 NFL Draft
Right tackle Francis Mauigoa, 10th overall to the New York Giants and edge rushers Rueben Bain, 15th by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and 22nd to the Los Angeles Chargers, validated the hard work by Cristobal, Mirabal, Taylor, former Miami DL coach Joe Salave'a and his replacement Damione Lewis.
Miami relied heavily on the run in its CFP wins at Texas A&M and versus Ohio State in the first two rounds. The Hurricanes ran for 629 yards, averaging 4.59 yards per carry with five touchdowns in their four CFP games. Miami allowed 386 rushing yards on 3.09 YPC with four TDs during the CFP.
Although Miami lost Mauigoa, Bain and Mesidor, the line of scrimmage will always remain a priority and should continue to be strong as long as Cristobal is the head coach. Five-star freshmen Jackson Cantwell and edge rushers Marquise Lightfoot and Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II lead Miami on the line of scrimmage in 2026.
