Bernie Kosar, the quarterback who led Miami to its first national championship, is hospitalized in Cleveland and undergoing a series of procedures while he awaits a liver transplant.
Kosar, 61, shared in recent social media updates that he had undergone two aggressive procedures to address internal bleeding and expected a third. His transplant, which had been scheduled for last weekend, was postponed after doctors determined the donor organ was infected. He asked for prayers and support while he remains under care.

The outpouring of well-wishes has included messages from Miami fans and alumni across social platforms. Cleveland Browns fans have given support as well, in addition to South Florida-based fans.

Kosar disclosed in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's disease. He has discussed his health publicly since, and multiple outlets reported this week that his doctors are attempting to stabilize internal bleeding while he remains on the transplant list.
Kosar has also launched Kosar Wellness, a company he founded after confronting the long-term physical and neurological effects of a football career. The brand's stated aim is to offer non-pharmaceutical, plant-based formulations to support focus, energy and long-term brain health.

Kosar was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and added to the program's Ring of Honor in 1999.
After leaving UM early via the 1985 supplemental draft, Kosar spent nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns, winning three AFC Central titles and reaching three AFC Championship Games. He later won a Super Bowl with Dallas and finished his career with the Miami Dolphins. His Miami ties remained strong through frequent appearances and alumni events.
The response from Miami's fan base has been immediate and visible online, echoing the esteem he holds in Coral Gables four decades after that first national championship.ย
