Malik Zaire's claim that Marcus Freeman is a better coach than Mario Cristobal has caused a firestorm on social media. Freeman has the stronger career winning percentage and a College Football Playoff resume that demands respect. Cristobal has built elite rosters at multiple stops, won conference championships at Oregon and just took Miami to its first CFP national championship game.
So who is the "better" coach? The answer is more complicated than just one head-to-head matchup. Let's take a look at 7 key grades that give us a closer look.
1. Overall head coaching resume
Mario Cristobal: A-
Marcus Freeman: A
Freeman has a clear advantage in winning percentage. He enters 2026 with a 43-12 record as Notre Dame's head coach, good for a .782 winning percentage. Cristobal is 97-79 across 15 seasons as a head coach at FIU, Oregon and Miami. But the evaluation of head coaching record needs context because Cristobal took over a struggling FIU program before rebuilding Oregon into a Pac-12 champion and returning Miami to national relevance.
But even with that taken into consideration, Freeman's results are hard to argue with. He has finished with double-digit wins in three of his four full seasons and has lost only 12 games. Cristobal has the wider body of work and more program-building experience, so we're really just splitting hairs here.
2. Recent trajectory
Mario Cristobal: A+
Marcus Freeman: A+
This is a draw since both programs are competing for national championships under their current coach.
Freeman led Notre Dame to a 14-2 record in 2024, the most wins in program history, and guided the Irish to the national championship game for the first time since 2012. Notre Dame followed that season with a 10-2 regular-season finish in 2025 after winning its final 10 games.
Cristobal's climb at Miami has really turned the corner over the last two years. The Hurricanes went 10-3 in 2024, then reached 13-3 in 2025 after beating Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss in the CFP. Miami's 13 wins set a program record, and the Hurricanes finished No. 2 in the final ranking.
3. High school recruiting
Mario Cristobal: A
Marcus Freeman: A
Under Cristobal, Miami and Oregon have recruited at elite levels. Over the past couple of years, the Hurricanes have become one of the toughest teams to compete with on the recruiting trail.
Freeman is also an excellent recruiter in his own right. The Irish have recruited nationally with far better results under Freeman than they did for much of the previous decade.
4. Portal and roster construction
Mario Cristobal: A
Marcus Freeman: A-
Both teams have used the portal effectively, but Cristobal and Miami have had more success, specifically at the QB position. Cam Ward arrived from Washington State and became a Heisman finalist before going No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft and Carson Beck turned his career around with his final season in Coral Gables.
Freeman deserves credit for portal evaluations such as Riley Leonard, who helped lead Notre Dame to the 2024 CFP title game. But the Sam Hartman year felt like there could have been more.
It should be noted that both teams have grabbed key assets over the years and both programs stand on their values when recruitments get to be too crazy... but... edge to Cristobal here.
5. Player development and NFL results
Mario Cristobal: A
Marcus Freeman: A-
If you have made it this far, you are probably starting to realize that Cristobal and Freeman are both great coaches (if you didn't already know).
Cristobal's Miami program sent nine players to the 2026 NFL Draft, including three first-round selections. The Hurricanes produced the No. 1 overall pick in Ward in 2025, while Cristobal's Oregon run included top-10 selections Justin Herbert, Penei Sewell and Kayvon Thibodeaux in consecutive drafts.
Freeman has also built an NFL pipeline in a short time. Notre Dame had seven players selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, highlighted by No. 5 overall pick Joe Alt. The Irish added six more draftees in 2025, including Benjamin Morrison, Xavier Watts, Jack Kiser and Riley Leonard. That pipeline continued in 2026, when Notre Dame had six players drafted, led by first-round running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, with Malachi Fields, Eli Raridon, Billy Schrauth and Gabriel Rubio also selected.
Cristobal has the longer record of producing first-round offensive linemen and premium NFL talent. He gets the nod here, but just barely.
6. Big-game performance
Mario Cristobal: B+
Marcus Freeman: A-
Freeman has the deeper collection of ranked wins. Notre Dame beat seven ranked opponents during its 2024 CFP run, the most in school history for one season. The Irish beat Indiana, Georgia and Penn State in the playoff before falling to Ohio State in the national title game.
Cristobal answered with Miami's best big-game run in a generation. The Hurricanes beat Notre Dame in the opener, then knocked off Texas A&M, defending national champion Ohio State and Ole Miss in the playoff. Miami won four games against top-10 opponents and seven games against top-25 teams in 2025.
Freeman has more ranked wins across his tenure, and Cristobal has had some rough moments in late-game scenarios. Freeman has the edge, but there is no way to call either coach weak in big games after the last two seasons.
7. Head-to-head result
Mario Cristobal: A+
Marcus Freeman: B
Cristobal and Miami won the only game between them. The Hurricanes beat Notre Dame 27-24 after Carter Davis made a 47-yard field goal at the end of the game.
Final grade
With Notre Dame and Miami playing again this upcoming season, it's important to realize these grades might change. And it's also something that people should evaluate critically without trying to have a hot take for online clicks.
