Miami fans barely got to know quarterback Reese Poffenbarger who became the first former Hurrican to announce his entry into the 2025 transfer portal. Multiple reports emerged on Wednesday that Poffenbarger is entering the transfer portal after Poffenbarger completed six passes in seven attempts for 20 yards in 2024.

Offensive lineman Antonio Tripp who was a three-star signee in the 2023 Miami class announced on X his intention to enter the transfer portal on Friday. Tripp played one game each during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The IMG Academy alum will have three seasons of eligiblity remaining.

Running back Chris Johnson Jr. joined Tripp announcing his decision to enter the transfer portal on Friday. Johnson had 17 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown and eight receptions for 72 yards and two more scores. Johnson was buried on the depth chart on a deep Miami RB group.

In 2024 Johnson was the primary kick returner for Miami with 19 returns for 285 yards and a 24.4 yard average. After playing in four games in 2023, Johnson will have three years of eligiblity remaining. Johnson was the 256th prospect, 17th RB and 51st player in Florida in the 2023 class.

The fall transfer portal opens officially on Monday December 9 and runs through December 28. Players participating in the College Football Playoff can enter the portal when their teams are eliminated. The spring transfer portal window is April 16-25, 2025. The portal windows were shortened from 2024.

Expect Miami to be busiest adding transfers in the secondary. Miami was not deep in the secondary in 2024 and its was their most vulnerable position that led to the loss in the final game of the regular season at Syracuse that ultimately kept Miami out of the ACC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.

Running back could be a position Miami needs to fill depth at in 2025. Johnson is in the transfer portal and Damian Martinez is expected to enter the NFL Draft. Miami returns second-leading rusher Mark Fletcher and Jordan Lyle who had an outstanding freshman year as the third RB in the rotation.

Bobby and Robby Washington were never able to completely break into the rotation for Miami. Bobby had seven tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks in 14 games over two seasons. Robby had two receptions for 27 yards in 2023 before moving to defense and recording three tackles in seven games in 2024.

Allen joins Johnson as Miami running backs who entered the transfer portal. Allen fell out of favor over the second half of the season as Lyle emerged. Freshman Chris Wheatley-Humphrey who redshirted in 2024 and 2025 signee Girard Pringle Jr. will have the first opportunities behind Fletcher and Lyle.

Stafford was a four-star signee in 2023 who struggled to find defensive snaps. After not receiving any playing time as a true freshman in 2023, Stafford had seven tackles, one pass breakup and one pass defended in 2024 per his official Miami biography.

More Miami players will continue to enter the transfer portal. Monday will be an extremely busy day throughout college football and Miami will be no different. Some of the players will be told that is it in their best interests to find opportunities at other programs and others will decide to leave on their own.
