Miami football made Urban Meyer eat his words after dominating Ohio State

The Miami Hurricanes pulled off what Urban Meyer (yes, a former Ohio State head coach) thought was impossible at the Cotton Bowl.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Urban Meyer, legendary football coach and more specifically, a former Ohio State head coach, would back the Buckeyes heading into their Cotton Bowl matchup against the Miami Hurricanes.

However, Meyer's prediction for the score line was a little ridiculous, and the Canes were able to eat his words, almost immediately.

"I just don't see Miami scoring," Meyer said. "I've told people, if Ohio State scores two touchdowns, they win that game. And I still believe that."

Well, that certainly didn't work out. Miami trounced Ohio State, even though the Buckeyes scored those two touchdowns.

Urban Meyer's Ohio State bias bites him

Supporting the team you coached to a National Championship is completely understandable, and usually works out pretty well for whoever the supporter is. Meyer's mistake came when he entirely took Miami's offense out of the game and didn't give the idea of the Canes winning a second thought.

Miami defeated Ohio State 24-14, dominating the first half and only slightly taking their foot off the gas in the third and fourth quarters.

Yes, the Buckeyes were undeniably favored and were obviously the higher-seeded team going into the game. However, don't doubt an underdog story in the playoffs, especially for a team that just shut down the Texas A&M Aggies on their home turf.

Up next, the Canes will face the winner of the Georgia-Ole Miss rematch, set to kick off at 8 p.m. ET on New Year's Day. While both teams are seeded higher than Miami, maybe those numbers (and Meyer's predictions) don't mean quite as much as they used to.

Miami's semifinal matchup (against the Georgia Bulldogs and Ole Miss Rebels) is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, Jan. 8, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
