Miami gets needed run rule victory over Bethune-Cookman

Miami got a needed run-rule win over Bethune-Cookman while nearly pitching a no-hitter.

Miami earned a much-needed 11-1 run-rule win over Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday night. Reese Lumpkin and Carl Fischer fell two batters shy of a perfect game and a solo home run away from a no-hitter and shutout. Miami earned its third win in the last four games with the victory over Bethune-Cookman.

Miami got started with an RBI groundout by Derrick Williams that scored Fabio Peralta on Wednesday. A Jorge Rodriguez home run in the top of the second inning tied the game and was the only hit and run for Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday night. A Peralta three-run HR in the third inning gave Miami the lead for good, 4-1.

A Todd Hudson RBI single in the fourth and Williams HR in the fifth extended the Miami lead to 6-1. Cvuet drove in two runs with a double and was followed by a single by Bobby Marsh to score him and later in the inning, a Tanner Smith bases-loaded walk and led 10-1 after six innings.

A Jake Ogden RBI single in the seventh inning drove in Galvin and gave Miami the walk-off 11-1 run rule win. Reese Lumpkin pitched six innings, allowing the one hit and earned run with no walks and three strikeouts to improve to 3-2 with the win. Fischer pitched an inning with two strikeouts to earn the win.

Every batter in the Miami order had a hit except for Dorian Gonzalez, who walked twice. Peralta led Miami with three RBIs. Cuvet, Galvin, Marsh, Ogden and Williams each had two hits for Miami. Four Hurricanes added two runs scored on Wednesday. Miami scored runs off of six Bethune-Cookman pitchers.

Duke is at Miami for the Hurricanes first home weekend series in three weeks. Miami will conclude their five-game homestand versus Florida Atlantic on Tuesday. Duke beat Campbell with a walk-off grand slam on Wednesday. FAU swept East Carolina over the weekend and hosts Memphis Friday through Sunday.
