Stanford head coach Tavita Pritchard has named Michigan transfer Davis Warren the Cardinal's starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Pritchard is in his first season as head coach.

Warren will make his Stanford debut on Aug. 29 against Hawai'i, then face the Miami Hurricanes on Sept. 4.

Warren competed with Dylan Rizk, freshman Michael Mitchell Jr. and others before securing the job.

He started nine games for Michigan in 2024, completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,199 yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. He went 6-3 as a starter that season. Warren tore the ACL in his right knee during Michigan's bowl win over Alabama and missed the entire 2025 season while recovering before transferring to Stanford in January.

A walk-on who earned a scholarship under Jim Harbaugh, Warren was a backup on Michigan's 2023 national championship team. He is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with leukemia as a high school junior and later returned to the field.

Stanford finished 4-8 overall and 3-5 in ACC play in 2025. Pritchard and general manager Andrew Luck are committed to long-term rebuilding. If Stanford was anything like when Luck played there, you would hear a lot more Miami fans show concern over this game. Unfortunately for the Cardinal faithful, that simply isn't the case.

Miami has its target set for Week 1

With Stanford undergoing a major transition period within the program, they don't present the challenges that they could to Miami. The Hurricanes have to travel across the country, just about as far as they could in college football (without playing Hawai'i), but there isn't a lot of worry about the outcome in Week 1.

In October of 2025, Miami welcomed Stanford into Hard Rock Stadium and absolutely wiped the floor with them. The Canes won 42-7, outsourcing the Cardinal, 35-0 after halftime.
