Florida QB DJ Lagway, once sold as the future of the Gators and a possible early NFL draft pick, is entering the transfer portal and has now instantly becomes one of the most coveted players available this offseason.

Lagway is expected to formally appear in the portal when the winter window opens on Jan. 2 and will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

DJ Lagway's career at Florida is full of ups and downs

Lagway's sophomore season never quite matched the hype. He battled a core muscle injury, shoulder issues and a calf problem that limited him through spring and summer, then played through nagging problems during the fall. He still started all 12 games in 2025 and completed 63.2% of his passes for 2,264 yards with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, but added just 101 rushing yards as his mobility was muted. That production came as Florida fired head coach Billy Napier during his fourth season, elevated Billy Gonzales as interim coach and then hired former Tulane coach Jon Sumrall after the year, leaving Lagway in the middle of a reset.

Lagway took over the starting job late in 2024 and went 6-1 as a true freshman, closing the season with four straight wins over LSU, Ole Miss and rival Florida State before a dominant Gasparilla Bowl victory against Tulane. He threw for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns that year and looked like a rising star, drawing offseason buzz as one of the top returning players in college football and a potential breakout Heisman candidate.

Miami Hurricanes and DJ Lagway are a perfect match

Lagway should have no shortage of potential suitors, but, the choice is obvious. If he is looking for a reset that elevates him into the NFL, Miami checks just about every box. Lagway would be walking into a program that just went 10-2, made the CFP and is recruiting and spending with the biggest brands in college football under HC Mario Cristobal.

Carson Beck came to Coral Gables for one final season of eligibility, so the starting job is wide open again in 2026. And Miami's staff just showcased Beck as a high-efficiency distributor after his NFL stock tanked in 2024. That's the exact kind of environment Lagway needs after a bumpy year at Florida, where he still flashed the tools, but finished poorly.

What OC Shannon Dawson has done with Beck isn't just a one-time thing either. Cam Ward was already pretty established when he transferred to Miami, but things were turned up to a different level when he got to Coral Gables. The offense was No. 1 in the country and we all know the numbers Ward put up on his way to the top overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

On top of that, Miami has weapons returning that fit Lagway's skillset. He was an elite deep-ball and off-platform thrower coming out of high school, and his best college tape is still him pushing the ball downfield. Miami can surround him with real weapons, with the best being Malachi Toney, who just put up 84 catches for 970 yards as a true freshman. The run game is full of young, hungry backs, that have made an impact this season and that's not even mentioning the O-line that has been dominant all season long.

For Miami, the QB room still has a lot of questions, and this just makes too much sense. Add in the fact that Miami's NIL made Beck the highest paid transfer last season, it sounds like a pretty good offer is coming to Lagway.
