Miami freshman forward Isaiah Johnson-Arigu is the first player to enter the transfer portal since Jim Larranaga resigned last month. Johnson-Arigua scored eight points in as many games, made four of his 10 shots from the floor, missed all four 3-point attempts and had six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Miami players have 30 days to enter the transfer portal after Larranaga announced his resignation on Dec. 26. That gives them until Jan. 20, or they must wait until the season is complete. Expect Miami to lose multiple players to the transfer portal when the season finishes in March.

Larranaga told Miami athletic director Dan Radakovic he was resigning effective immediately on Dec. 22. Miami lost 78-74 to lower Division I program Mount St. Mary's 78-74 in overtime on Dec. 21. It was the second loss of the season for Miami to a lower Division I program. Miami lost 83-79 to Charleston Southern on Nov. 30.

Johnson-Arigua was the No. 129 player overall and No. 26 small forward in the 2024 class out of Minneapolis Totino-Grace - he was also the No. 3 player from Minnesota for his class. The departure of Johnson-Arigu to the transfer portal is more of a long-term loss than one that will hurt Miami for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season.

Johnson-Arigua had played only 42 minutes in eight games. The best performance for Johnson-Arigu in his extremely short-term stint with Miami was four points in a 93-63 Miami win over Coppin State on Nov. 17. The other three Miami freshmen have played significantly more minutes than Johnson-Arigua.

Freshmen guards Austin Swartz and Divine Ugochukwu are averaging 14 minutes per game and Jalil Bethea plays 13 MPG. Bethea has played in all 14 games this season, Ugochukwu has received minutes in 13 and Swartz has played in 12 games. Miami signed center Ben Ahmad and guard Matthew Able in the 2025 class.
