Miami Hurricanes News: Cristobal details injuries, ProCanes roll through NFL Week 2

No. 6 Miami is 3-0 and preparing for Saturday's home game against Central Michigan, but the week after a 33-20 win at Wake Forest has been defined by the injuries.

Coach Mario Cristobal said Monday that running back CharMar Brown and wide receiver Joshua Moore are done for the season, while several other regulars are being managed after a physical Friday night in Winston-Salem. Across the NFL, former Hurricanes filled box scores through Sunday, with Monday night's Giants-Rams game still left to play.

Injury news

Cristobal, speaking Monday on WQAM's The Joe Rose Show, confirmed what was expected for Brown, who was Miami's second-leading rusher a year ago. Moore, who caught a first-quarter touchdown against the Demon Deacons, is also out for the year with an upper-body injury, and that came as a surprise.

Linebacker Ezekiel Marcelin Jr., who had been earning first-team snaps, is expected to miss several weeks with a lower-body injury. He was in line for a larger role prior to the injury.

Cristobal also said he expects Malachi Toney and Mark Fletcher Jr. to be available after both got banged up during the Wake Forest game. Defensive tackle Ahmad Moten Sr. exited early with an apparent shoulder issue, then returned, and Cristobal said he expects Moten to be fine as well.

Running back Jordan Lyle is expected to be back this week and should be in line to see snaps against Central Michigan now that the RB room needs the depth.

The secondary is still short-handed with cornerbacks O.J. Frederique Jr., Xavier Lucas and Ja'boree Antoine sidelined for extended stretches.

Wake Forest hangover, rankings and Central Michigan

Miami led 31-7 in the third quarter on Friday before Wake Forest cut the deficit as the Hurricanes' offense stalled down the stretch. The defense closed the door with a series of fourth-quarter stops, but the offense was concerning in the second half.

Quarterback Darian Mensah completed his first 24 passes, setting Hurricanes and ACC records for consecutive completions to start a game, and finished 30 of 34 for 220 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. The streak reached 35 completions dating to the Florida A&M game, breaking the conference multi-game mark. Mensah has 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions through three games.

The AP poll on Sunday dropped Miami one spot to No. 6 after Ole Miss got a massive victory against LSU and vaulted up to No. 4. The Hurricanes received one first-place vote.

Miami hosts Central Michigan on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium on The CW, the Hurricanes' first Saturday game of the season. The Chippewas are 2-1 and a trip to Clemson follows on Oct. 3.

ProCanes in NFL Week 2

Miami's NFL pipeline was busy from Thursday night through Sunday.

The best performances through Sunday:

• Greg Rousseau, Bills: Three tackles, two sacks, four quarterback hits and a forced fumble in Buffalo's 41-31 win over Detroit on Thursday. Rousseau has four sacks and three forced fumbles through two games.
• Cam Ward, Titans: Tennessee fell 24-20 to Philadelphia, but Ward completed 13 of 20 passes for 183 yards with no interceptions and ran four times for 7 yards and two touchdowns. The Titans led late before the Eagles scored with nine seconds remaining.
• Jaelan Phillips, Panthers: Two tackles and a sack in Carolina's 34-3 win at Atlanta. Phillips has two sacks through two games after also getting one against Chicago in Week 1.
• Akheem Mesidor, Chargers: The rookie finished with three tackles, a half-sack and two quarterback hits in Los Angeles' 26-14 loss to Las Vegas.
• Keionte Scott, Buccaneers: The rookie defensive back notched his first career sack and added a tackle for loss in Tampa Bay's 23-19 home loss to Cleveland.
• Andres Borregales, Patriots: Accounted for eight points in New England's 20-3 win over Pittsburgh, making two of three field goals with a long of 45 yards and converting both extra-point tries.
• Tyrique Stevenson, Bears: Five tackles and a pass breakup in Chicago's 9-3 loss to Minnesota.
• Rayshawn Jenkins, Steelers: Five tackles, four solo, in Pittsburgh's loss at New England.
• Mike Jackson, Panthers: Three tackles in Carolina’s blowout of Atlanta.
• DeeJay Dallas, Vikings: Two carries for 8 yards and one catch for 12 yards in Minnesota's 9-3 win at Chicago.
• Elijah Arroyo, Seahawks: One catch for 17 yards in Seattle's 31-7 win at Arizona.
• David Njoku, Chargers: One catch for 9 yards before suffering a right-knee injury early in the second quarter against Las Vegas. Njoku was carted off and did not return. He had six catches for 67 yards through two games after signing a one-year deal with Los Angeles.
• Calais Campbell, Ravens: One assisted tackle in Baltimore's 24-17 loss to New Orleans.
• Anthony Campbell, Packers: One solo tackle in Green Bay's 20-17 overtime win over the Jets.

Other Canes in the NFL

• Jalen Rivers played as a reserve offensive lineman in Cincinnati’s 20-6 win over Houston.
• Markel Bell appeared for Philadelphia without starting.
• Francisco Mauigoa played for the Jets without recording a defensive statistic.
• Rueben Bain Jr. and Al-Quadin Muhammad did not record a tackle for Tampa Bay against Cleveland.
• Brevin Jordan was inactive for Houston and Jakobe Thomas was inactive for Minnesota.

Monday night watch

Three Miami alums are on the Giants-Rams rosters, with two available.

Francis Mauigoa, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 draft, is New York's starting right guard after opening the season in the Giants' Week 1 win. He dealt with a shoulder issue during the week, practiced fully Saturday and does not have a game designation, so he is expected to play.

Rams wide receiver C.J. Daniels is on the active roster and is not listed on the injury report. Safety Kamren Kinchens will not play after the Rams ruled him out with a hamstring injury.

Around the program

Miami's apparel future became official last week when the university announced a 10-year partnership with Nike worth more than $200 million, beginning in 2027 after the current Adidas contract expires.

Miami also announced that Canes basketball will host an open scrimmage against Vanderbilt on Oct. 23rd (tip-off at 6 p.m. EST).
