The Miami Hurricanes should be ranked ahead of Utah in the College Football Playoff Rankings on Tuesday night.

Last week's CFP rankings had Utah at No. 12 and Miami at No. 13, both sitting at 8-2. Since then, both teams won again. Miami went on the road and handled Virginia Tech 34-17 behind 320 passing yards and four touchdowns from Carson Beck, pushing the Hurricanes to 9-2 and extending their streak of wins by at least 17 points to three straight.

Utah survived at home against Kansas State 51-47, needing a last-minute touchdown and giving up a staggering 472 rushing yards in the process.

The case for Miami over Utah

The AP poll reacted by sliding Utah to No. 14, one spot behind No. 13 Miami. The voters already flipped the two... the selection committee should follow.

Start with the resume comparison. Miami owns one of the best wins anyone in the country has: a 27-24 victory over Notre Dame, which sits in the top 10 of the CFP rankings. The Hurricanes also crushed then-No. 18 South Florida 49-12, their largest margin over a ranked opponent since 2001. They added rivalry wins against Florida State and Florida as well. Also, the SMU and Louisville losses are nothing to be ashamed of. Both of those programs are having very good seasons.

The Utes are 9-2 with two quality losses to Texas Tech and BYU, but they have only one win over a team currently ranked in the CFP Top 25 — Arizona State. It's the same scenario as Notre Dame. They are getting more credit for losing close than winning against anybody relevant. Granted, Utah did beat Cincinnati handily, but that win holds the same weight as Miami's win over USF.

The committee has leaned heavily on good losses this year, which explains some of its affection for Utah. But at some point, a team with multiple top-25 victories, including a top-10 win, deserves to be rewarded more than a team that has survived more than it has impressed.
