Reggie Wayne who is third in Miami history with 173 receptions and 2,510 receiving yards was named as one of 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Monday. Wayne was one of three wide receivers named as a finalist with Torry Holt and Steve Smith Sr. Smith is the only one of the three who did not win a Super Bowl.
Wayne could be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame one season after kick returner Devin Hester and WR Andre Johnson who was Wayne's backup at Miami as the most recent Hurricanes to be enshrined in Canton. Wayne was a six-time Pro Bowler and named first-team All-Pro in 2010.
Wayne is 10th all-time with 1,070 career receptions and had four seasons in the top 10, is also 10th with 14,345 receiving yards and had seven seasons in the top 10, is 21st with an average of 13.4 yards per touch and 15th all-time with 21 career playoff games started.
Wayne is the Colts all-time leader with 211 games played, most receptions in a game with 15 versus Jacksonville in 2010 and is second in franchise history, just 245 yards behind Marvin Harrison. Playing across from Harrison has probably hindered Wayne's path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Wayne played at Miami from 1997 through 2000 as the Hurricanes emerged from probation under Butch Davis. A four-year starter, Wayne also ran the 200 meters in track. Wayne set the Miami freshman record with 48 receptions in 1997 that still stands.
If Wayne is selected he would become the 12th Miami Hurricane in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and third WR. Former Oakland Raiders center Jim Otto was the first Miami alum inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980 and Michael irvin became the first Hurricanes WR enshrined in 2007.
