Miami lost five of its last six ACC games to fall from a potential bye in the ACC Tournament to playing in the first round on Tuesday. Miami would have earned a first-round bye in the ACC Tournament with a win on Saturday after Louisville beat Wake Forest on Saturday.
Notre Dame scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead on their way to a 12-2 victory. Miami finishes the regular season 31-23 overall and 15-14 in the ACC. Miami will play California in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Cal is 21-30 overall and 8-21 in its first season in the ACC.
Notre Dame took the lead in the first inning on a Parker Brzustewicz RBI single. The Fighting Irish extended the lead to 2-0 when Carson Tinney stole home. Brzustewicz was out attempting to steal second on the same play Tinney stole home.
Miami cut the lead in half with an RBI single from Daniel Cuvet to score Jake Ogden in the bottom of the first inning. Max Galvin doubled in the fifth to score Ogden and tie the game at two. Those were the only runs for Miami, as the Hurricanes had only seven hits and left seven runners on base.
Notre Dame regained the lead with a solo home run from Tinney in the top of the sixth inning. Estevan Moreno hit a two-run HR four batters later in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 5-2. Notre Dame scored one run in the seventh, five in the eighth and one in the ninth to earn the 12-2 win on Saturday and win the series.
Tinney hit a three-run HR in the eighth to finish with three hits in four at-bats, three runs scored and four runs batted in. Brzustewicz had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Cuvet and Ogden each had two hits for Miami. California and Miami will open the ACC Tournament on Tuesday at 9 AM Eastern Time.
