Cornerback D'Yoni Hill who started five games for Miami in 2024 is entering the transfer portal after spending one season with the Hurricanes. Hill had 33 tackles, 1,0 tackle for loss, 1.0 pass breakup and 1.0 pass defended in 2024. Hill transferred to Miami from Marshall where he previously played for fired Hurricanes' defensive coordinator Lance Guidry.
Hill was elevated on the depth chart after injuries to CBs Damari Brown and Jadais Richard. After not playing in the final two games of the regular season Hill had six tackles versus Iowa State in the 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Hill is the sixth Miami defensive back to enter the transfer portal.
Miami previously lost CBs Myles Mooyoung and Robbie Washington and safeties Jaden Harris and Isaiah Thomas. Harris and Thomas both entered the transfer portal in the last week. Miami also loses CB Darryl Porter Jr. and safety Mishael Powell who completed their collegiate eligibility.
Miami is adding CBs Charles Brantley from Michigan State and Emmanuel Karnley from Arizona, plus safety Zechariah Poyser from Jacksonville State to help improve the secondary in 2025. Expect Miami to continue target transfers in the second to add depth and potential 2025 starters.
Miami returns O.J. Frederique who was named a freshman All-American, Brown and Richard at CB in 2025 to go with Brantley and Karnley. Miami signed four-star CBs Jaboree Antoine, Chris Ewald and and Amari Wallace in the 2025 class. The incoming freshmen will be given a chance to compete for Miami in 2025.
As it stands now, Brantley, Brown, Frederique, Karnley and Richard project as the top five CBs for Miami in 2025. The Arizona defensive coaching staff could have a lot of transition when a replacement for Guidry is hired. Cornerbacks coach Chevis Jackson coached under Guidry at Marshall.
