So you are telling me there is a chance? Not really, but there is a non-zero one that Mark Matthews does opt to stay home to play his college football at Miami. The Fort Lauderdale native has been a strong lean to Texas A&M in recent weeks. If and when he does pick the Aggies over the Hurricanes, that will be yet another local product that has left South Florida while under Mario Cristobal's watch.
On May 15, Matthews will be announcing where he is committing to between these four programs.
- Georgia Bulldogs
- LSU Tigers
- Miami Hurricanes
- Texas A&M Aggies
Even if Miami only has a prayer to land him now, leave it up to Israel Abrams to chuck up a Hail Mary...

This is what you should expect out of a recruiting class' quarterback of note, so good job by him here!
According to the 247Sports Composite, Matthews is the No. 1 prospect from Florida, the No. 1 offensive tackle in the nation, and the No. 5 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class. The St. Thomas Aquinas standout has been tied to these four programs throughout the recruiting process, but it quickly became a two-team race. Now it is really only one. Miami is expected to lose to Texas A&M...
While we should appreciate Abrams' efforts in trying to get him to come aboard, this is a lost cause.
Israel Abrams tires his best to convince Mark Matthews to come to Miami
Although Matthews' mind may already be made up, Abrams not giving up the fight could be a sign of something positive to build on moving forward. While Miami has largely used the transfer portal to get the most out of its quarterback position in recent seasons, maybe Abrams can be a rallying point for change in that regard? Winning in the portal is great, but doing so out of high school is much better...
It is because winning out of the portal is not as sustainable as winning big with high school recruiting.
When Miami is at its best, the Hurricanes are able to not only get whoever they want out of high school nationally, but they develop a viselike stranglehold on the South Floridian region. Unless you really want to play for Florida or Florida State, the best players from Miami do not leave. Well, they are leaving now with one of their own at the helm in Cristobal. This has to change or it may mean trouble...
Overall, Miami likely missing out on Matthews does not help change of the narrative of Cristobal struggling to protect his home turf. Although Texas A&M can and will outspend anyone, Miami will pay a pretty penny for a guy they like as well. Regardless, nothing is official until Matthews says it is. He may commit to Texas A&M on Friday, but until he signs his NIL in December, things can change fast.
At this time, Miami fans should expect for Matthews to commit to Texas A&M , and not come to Miami.
