Miami remains 3rd post week 7 12-team College Football Playoff rankings prediction
A wild two weeks have shuffled the College Football Playoff projections. Miami remains the predicted third seed after a bye week. For the first time, two ACC teams are in the predicted CFP. Clemson has rebounded from the season-opening blowout loss to Georgia with five consecutive wins.
In the first year of major realignment in the Big 10 and SEC, more high-profile games will create teams moving up and down in the CFP predictions each week. The win by Oregon over Ohio State on Saturday night puts the Ducks as the second seed in the projected CFP after week seven.
Texas remains the one seed with Iowa State earning the final first-round bye as the top team in the Big XII. The at-large teams shuffled following week four. Penn State moved up to the fifth seed with a 6-0 record following their win at USC on Saturday. Ohio State fell from second to sixth after the loss at Oregon.
Alabama is seventh after narrowly escaping South Carolina with a 27-25 win. Georgia is eighth due to their loss at Alabama in September. LSU moves into the playoff and knocks Mississippi out following their win over the Rebels. Clemson slots in one spot behind LSU as the 10th seed.
Seed | Team | Record |
---|---|---|
1 | Texas | 6-0 |
2 | Oregon | 6-0 |
3 | Miami | 6-0 |
4 | Iowa State | 6-0 |
5 | Penn State | 6-0 |
6 | Ohio State | 5-1 |
7 | Alabama | 5-1 |
8 | Georgia | 5-1 |
9 | LSU | 5-1 |
10 | Clemson | 5-1 |
11 | Notre Dame | 5-1 |
12 | Boise State | 5-1 |
Notre Dame moves back into the last at-large berth as the 11th seed with four consecutive wins after their loss to Northern Illinois. Notre Dame has wins over Top 20 teams Texas A&M and Louisville this season. Miami would project to play the Notre Dame-Ohio State winner in the quarterfinal.
The other matchups would be Texas versus the Georgia-LSU winner, Oregon against the winner of Alabama and Clemson and Iowa State playing either Boise State or Penn State. As the Big 10 and SEC teams continue to play each other the CFP predictions will continue to shuffle throughout the season.
Games to watch this week are seventh-ranked Alabama at number 11 Tennessee and fifth-ranked Georgia at number one Texas. A win by Georgia would put them back as the top team in the SEC. A loss by the Bulldogs would likely knock them out of the CFP, at least temporarily.
Miami needs to keep winning. They do not have the benefit of playing a Big 10 or SEC schedule. Miami probably needs to finish the regular season undefeated to avoid any margin of error in the ACC Championship Game. There is no guarantee ACC or Big XII teams would receive an at-large CFP berth with two losses.
