This June, Miami’s beloved bird received major recognition. Sebastian the Ibis was chosen to be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame (Class of 2025) on Good Morning America. He is the sole collegiate mascot in a class featuring pro mascots like Blitz (Seahawks), Fredbird (Cardinals), S.J. Sharkie (Sharks), and TORO (Texans). More than 125,000 votes from fans, combined with weighted decisions from committee members, secured his spot this year.

Sebastian is an anthropomorphic American white ibis decked out in Miami’s signature orange and green, usually sporting a “0” jersey and that iconic Hurricanes sailor cap. His origins reach back to 1926 when the ibis was chosen as a symbol due to folklore. The marsh bird is said to be the last to seek shelter before a hurricane hits and the first to reappear when skies clear, making it a perfect emblem of resilience and leadership for the Miami area.

Sebastian's first live-costume debut came in 1957, crafted by Norman Whitten and worn by student John Stormont in 1958. His look was refined in 1984, which remains largely the same today. Over the decades, students who played Sebastian kept their identities secret, traditionally revealing themselves at graduation by wearing mascot feet.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, Sebastian’s personality and traditions were shaped by performer John Routh, who also introduced the Miami Maniac and created the signature “C-A-N-E-S” cheer using his body to spell it out during games. One of his most infamous moments came in 1989, when he was tackled by police during a game in Tallahassee after theatrically attempting to extinguish FSU’s flaming spear.

Sebastian’s Hall of Fame honor shines a light on his enduring impact, whether he is hyping the crowd on game day, making surprise appearances around campus, or rallying fans with his cheers.

Shout out to Sebastian. It's been a long time coming.
