Tre Donaldson carried Miami down the stretch again Tuesday night, scoring a career-high 32 points and knocking down the go-ahead free throw with 12.5 seconds left to lift the Hurricanes past Virginia Tech 67-66 at the Watsco Center.

Miami got the win despite being outshot, leaning on Donaldson's shot-making and just enough late defense to survive the Hokies' final possession. Virginia Tech's Ben Hammond had a last-second, off-balance layup attempt that did not fall, sealing Miami's one-point escape.

Donaldson did most of his damage after halftime, scoring 24 of his 32 in the second half. He finished 13 of 24 from the field and 3 of 7 from 3-point range, also adding two steals.

The Hokies shot 50% overall (28 of 56) and 40% from deep (8 of 20), led by Amani Hansberry's 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Jailen Bedford added 12 points, while Hammond scored 10 and Neoklis Avdalas handed out eight assists.

Miami, meanwhile, did not have its usual balance. Leading scorer Malik Reneau was held to nine points in 24 minutes, and Dante Allen was the only other Hurricane in double figures with 10. Ernest Udeh Jr. pulled down a team-high nine rebounds as Miami finished with a slim 33-31 edge on the glass.

The final two minutes were a grind. Virginia Tech pushed in front 65-61 late after a Tobi Lawal finish at the rim and a breakaway dunk following a Miami turnover. Donaldson answered with a pull-up jumper, then buried a 3 at the top of the key to tie it at 66 with 1:18 left. After a messy stretch on both ends, Miami ran clock, Donaldson drew contact near the top of the key, and his first free throw became the difference.

Miami went 9 of 13 on free throws, while Virginia Tech attempted just three foul shots (making two).

Miami improved to 21-5 overall and 10-3 in ACC play, and has won six of its last seven. Virginia Tech dropped to 17-10 and 6-8.

Next up, Miami hits the road for a marquee ACC test at No. 14 Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville.
